How to Get More Customers for Your Home Service Business

Most home service owners in Middle Tennessee do not have a marketing problem. They have an order-of-operations problem: they buy leads before they fix the basics, then conclude marketing does not work.
Here is the order that works, cheapest and highest-leverage first.
Where do your customers actually come from right now?
Before you spend a dollar, find out. For four weeks, ask every caller one question: how did you find us? Write the answer down. Most Middle Tennessee companies discover the same thing — the majority is referral and repeat, a chunk is Google, and the paid lead service they resent paying for is a smaller share than they assumed.
You cannot grow channels you are not measuring.
What is the cheapest way to get more work?
The customers you already have. A homeowner who liked your work is the least expensive job you will ever win, and almost nobody follows up.
- Call every customer from the last two years once, seasonally, with something specific — a system check before July, a gutter clean before spring storms.
- Ask for the referral out loud, once, at the moment they are pleased. Not in an email later.
- Leave something behind with your number on it. Fridge magnets still work in this business.
How do you get found when nobody knows your name?
Two places: Google, and directories homeowners search by town. Both matter because homeowners here do not search for you — they search for "plumber Murfreesboro" or "roofer near Gallatin".
Set up and finish your Google Business Profile: correct categories, service area, hours, and photos of real jobs. Then get listed everywhere a homeowner in your towns might look. See how to get your contracting business to show up on Google.
Should you buy leads?
Buy them if you have capacity you cannot fill and you have measured what a job is worth to you. Do not buy them as a substitute for having a findable business, because the price only goes up and you are renting the relationship. Shared leads mean you are one of four companies calling the same homeowner within a minute — the fastest caller wins, not the best company.

What actually loses you the jobs you already have?
Not answering. Homeowners in this market call three companies and hire whichever one calls back first with a straight answer. If you are on a roof at 2pm, the phone is going to voicemail — so decide who answers it. A part-time person answering the phone is usually a better investment than any advertising.
Then: quote fast, quote in writing, and follow up once. More work is lost between quote and signature than anywhere else in this business. See how to turn website visitors into calls and quote requests.
How do reviews fit in?
They decide who gets called out of the three companies a homeowner is looking at. A profile with eleven reviews loses to a profile with ninety, even if you are the better company. Reviews are a system, not luck — how to get more reviews for your home service business covers the ask.
How do you grow beyond your home town?
Only after the above is working. Then add one town at a time, where you already have jobs and can get there without wrecking your schedule. How to grow into new cities and service areas walks through the sequence — and why "we serve all of Middle Tennessee" is weaker than naming eight towns.
What should you do this month?
- 1Track how every caller found you.
- 2Finish your Google Business Profile properly.
- 3Get listed in the places homeowners in your towns search.
- 4Fix who answers the phone.
- 5Ask ten past customers for a review.
None of that costs money. Do it before you buy anything.
What if you are licensed and the competition is not?
Say so, everywhere. Tennessee requires a contractor licence for projects of $25,000 or more, and a Home Improvement licence for jobs from $3,000 to $24,999 in the counties that adopted it — including Davidson, Robertson and Rutherford (Tennessee Board for Licensing Contractors). Homeowners in this market are actively looking for that, and most listings do not show it. Put your licence, insurance and years in business where they can be seen.
