How Do I Compare Two Contractor Quotes Without Choosing on Price Alone?
· Last updated

To compare two contractor quotes fairly, first make sure they cover the same work, then compare materials, timeline, warranty, payment terms and how clearly each contractor communicates. Only then compare price. A lower number often means something was left out.
What should I line up side by side?
| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Scope | Every task listed, including removal and cleanup |
| Materials | Brand, grade and quantity named |
| Permits | Who pulls them, and whether cost is included |
| Timeline | Start window and duration |
| Warranty | Workmanship length plus manufacturer coverage |
| Payment | Deposit size and when later payments are due |
| Change orders | How extra work is priced and approved |
Why is the cheapest quote risky?
It may skip permits, use lower-grade material, exclude disposal, or leave gaps that become change orders later. Ask the low bidder what is not included.
Can I ask contractors to re-quote?
Yes. Send each the same written scope and ask them to price it. That is the fastest way to a true comparison.
What else matters besides the paper?
Did they return your call, show up on time, and explain things plainly? How a contractor handles the estimate is usually how they handle the job.
What should I check before signing?
